The Travel Bug's 3 Fascinating Facts about Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth: TTB’s 3 Fascinating Facts

‘The Travel Bug recently spent two weeks in Aberystwyth while one of his humans was on a training course…’

Instead of helping her study, he decided he’d venture out to do some ‘splorin’ and see what facts he could uncover about the local area.  This is what he found out about the coastal town of Aberystwyth…

Crown Jewels

During the Second World War, in order to keep them safe from any London based bombing raids, the crown jewels were expertly hidden in the town.  Also relocated there for a period of safekeeping was a copy of the Magna Carta and a range of other items of historical and cultural value to the UK.  TTB thinks that, should there be a Third World War, he might pop back to Aber to hide out until the whole thing blows over.

Cliff Railway

Aberystwyth is home to Britain’s longest electrical cliff railway. This is located high up on Constitution Hill, at the northern end of the promenade.  The Travel Bug loves train rides and always demands to sit at the window seat so he can look outside.  This brings some odd sideways glances from other passengers.  The Travel Bug assumes this is because he’s so cute.  His humans know that it’s because people think it’s weird to see grown adults chatting to a ladybird.

TV Show

Y Gwyll (English: Hinterland), which is one of the TB’s favourite crime dramas, is set in Aberystwyth. You can visit many of the filming locations on a wander around town.  The Travel Bug was very excited to find a map of the locations on a local Aber website and likes to flutter round, pretending he’s solving all the murders.

Do you have any other fascinating facts about Aberystwyth to share with The Travel Bug??

Hasta pronto, amigos…
